Open Primary vs. Closed Primary

Thank you Mr. Wright, as tempting as that is and for the fellowship, I think I might be able to handle the install. It is as you said straight forward in the assembly. You are right South of Rolla if I remember. I'll be going through Rolla in June as I head to Indiana for a family reunion. But do appreciate the offer my friend.. I just rebuilt my front forks with new uppers and lowers. Chrome on the lowers were blistering something bad.. So new ones was thicket.

The Baker unit is a peice of cake to install and comes with very detailed instructions. Oh, probably one of the best looking belt drives out there.
Does anyone know approximately what a shop charges to have one of those put in?

I'll post some photos before and after on the install. My thinking is that I do not need to loosen the 6 tranny bolts as my alignment is spot on for my drive belt. I replaced rubber last October and checked the alignment with a laser and everything is right as rain. The rest seems simple enough. I just received info from Curtis at Wild Steed Worx that they will get the Drive on the 16th from Baker and then they will bundle everything that I ordered and ship post haste. Looking forward to the install, and to the ride..

Mr. Wright

Knows some things
Don't forget, you need to replace the engine crank seal, and flip it the other direction. Also lots of brake clean on the stator, to get the oil out. NOTE: When you get it all together and go for your first ride, more oil will come out of those coils and look like it's leaking oil.
Put it all together, then take it apart, and reassemble it with locktight.
If anything else pops in my head, I'll post it, so stay tuned.
Make sure you call before coming through Rolla, we'll do lunch or something.

Thank you very much, I didn't see that on the build sheet from Baker. But I will get a new one ordered and follow your instructions. PM me and I will give you my cell number and yes I will call and grab lunch. Would like to meet. I've been riding since I was 14 and June I hit 73. Getting older but not growing up. We are heading up your way on th 13th of June. I'll need a stop for gas and food.
I just emailed Curtis at Wild Steed Worx to see if he has the crank seal. I totally understand why it would go in backwards. Man thanks for the heads up...Two thumbs up!!!

Well I received my Baker Belt Drive today. Was impressed with the kit. However Curtis (Wild Steed Worx) stated that Baker would include the Crank Seal with the kit. But when I unpacked the box I could not find the crank seal among the included parts I was hoping for a Packing slip stating what was in the box but I did not find packing slip one. I have an email out to Curtis wanting a engine crank seal. So will have to wait until Monday to get a reply. In the meantime it is setting on my bench. I have too many rides ahead of me, so I will not tare down the primary until after Sturgis. Then I might just trailer up the bike an head to MR. Wright's abode and do a install and enjoy the company.. But most likely I'll just do it myself at home.

I asked a couple of my friends that have baker open primary’s and baker does NOT send a new crank seal with the kit, but you can get one from a local Harley dealer for $3.15 hopefully this helps you.

I was gonna say I hope someone has a part number for you. If you say Big Dog at Harley its like the blind leading the blind , at least around here.

Your correct the tolerances are spot on and you should definitely NOT have to loosen the transmission none of the 4 guys I know that have a baker open primary had to loosen the transmission the back plate should go right on with no trouble.

Well I wasn't going to loosen the tranny bolts for any reason, My alignment is spot on and I don't want another headache thrown into the mix. Around here if you walk into a Harley shop and say you have a Big Dog, just be careful as they might throw up on you. I just received an email from Curtis saying that he will get a seal out to me Monday. I also printed the photo of the seal to put in my service manual. Thanks for sharing that information. After receiving the Baker Belt Drive. I wasn't too happy with the polish job on the motor plate. So I took to myself to remedy the situation. Put it on my buffer and had it looking like chrome in a matter of a few swipes. I know that you will not see this plate once the belt is on but I will know that that piece is well polished. Rest of the kit was really nice. Well packaged and all parts was there. I'm still several weeks away to the install. B'cause I also ride for the PGR and have been busy with that. And I want to attend Sturgis again this year. Don't want to tare it down and then find that I missed something and cause me to miss my vacation. Hope I have my priorities right.

Should be around 250 to 300 bucks. It is so easy to install. but the shop may complain about the cleanup of the oil but that is part of the install.

This would be exactly why I wont go open. "more suceptiable to having road debries thrown into belt and shredding or f-ing up the pulleys-cost"

My friends bike has an open primary, and he had a rock kick up and go into the belt at 70 mph...... Wasn't a pretty site being next to him while it happened. No thanks.....
Did he wreck?

Well time has flown. I said that I would get before and after shots of my Baker Drive. But I just got in a hurry to finish the project and ride. That is just what I did. I do have a couple of after shots. But I can tell you this, I should have done the conversion years ago. The response is unbelievable. Love the sound of the drive and anywhere I go I get the thumbs up on the look. IMG_3923.jpegIMG_3925.jpeg
