Dropped off my 2 broken battery box covers today and asked them to order me a new speedo .. they want my old one before they will get me a new one, go figure! also it takes 6 weeks to get new battery covers ... anyone ride without them? I hope the new ones are better or I will have to reinforce them to avoid having to go through the again.

Slowrower,
When I got my speedo replaced at the end of October I offered to pay for next day shipping to get a quicker turnaround. I was told only the dealer can certify the mileage and the new one would have the matching mileage from Big Dog. It worked out for me, dropped off the K-9 on Thursday morning and got the call it was ready the following Saturday afternoon. The only problem.....it still fogs:rant:

I'll let you guys know what feedback I get from the dealer after I talk to them. I'm expecting to hear they will not replace....and I will try to get that in writing.

Thanks Big Ron .. I will take it to the dealer later in the week so they can remove it. Seeing how they have nothing in stock, it would take a week or so ti get it back.

IMPROPERLY INSTALLED TACHOMETER BOARDS MAY DEVELOP A SHORT CIRCUIT THAT COULD CAUSE THE MOTORCYCLE TO SHUT DOWN. THIS COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING AND RESULT IN A CRASH.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL ISOLATE THE TACHOMETER BOARD FROM THE HOUSING. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT AUGUST 24, 2007. IF there is water in there tachometers as we have seen for years!I see a short coming!05chop:cheers:

Latest info, called the dealer today and he said what others have recently stated "BD is not replacing anymore fogging speedo's with the exception of fogging conditions that totally obscure speedometer so bad that speed cannot be seen and speedo's that stop working altogether".

I asked since BD is aware of this problem will they fix a speedo after a warranty expires and if mine quit working. I was not able to get a hard yes (at this conversation) but was left feeling that I could get it replaced. I can only hope at this point and if the time comes.... will just have to see.

I did ask about getting this official BD position in writing and was told that I should not have any problem getting it from BD directly since this issue is no secret. This conversation was by phone and not face to face so I was not really in a position to get a copy of their service bulletin. If anyone has seen a copy or has access it would be great to have if needed.

Seems to be and issue in colder climates for the most part!

I've got to disagree with you on this one Ray, I'm on my 5th speedo now here in Florida. In Michigan I had 2 replaced for fogging and here mine still fogs. Now the speedo stopped working but the Tach works...Only real thing that bothers me about it is odometer doesn't work so I have no idea how much gas I have until I hit reserve...
Unless I'm eating Mexican food that is....LOL

I had a new (again) installed and picked up the bike last week. Rode it the day after Xmas and it fogged up again.

I have been thinking about this more... I'm trying to figure out if the temp changes on the front of the face are doing it, or the temp changes and moisture behind the face is causing it. If its all about the front, then even sealing up the rear wouldn't help any... Then the problem truely lies with the autometer which is probably why BDM is having such a hard time with it.

Yeah, or the ones specifically built for BDM QQ
I wanted to buy a regular Autometer (without BD logo) and replace it - but was told they would void my warranty on anything electrical.

The BDM speedometer is a 2 5/8" gauge. The Autometer Pro Cycle gauge is the same size. FYI, they are almost the exact gauge in all aspects except for the Autometer gauge needle does not have any needle bounce dampening built into it. Will be fine on a metric but put it on a v-twin and the needle will bounce all over the place. The Autometer gauge also has the original trip reset button like the old BDM gauges had that fell out / tore out very easily.

my scoot is at my dealer now.....I told them when I took my bike out when it was 36 degree's out.....my new speedo that they replaced last summer...froze up.....the tach worked...but not the speedo.....I went a couple of miles down the road......shut off the bike....then started it up and took off....speedo worked fine after that.....it did this 3 times on me....in cold weather.....so...I told my dealer to replace if they can....will keep everyone up dated

I'm wondering if there is an issue releated to when they paint the BDM logo on the dial, then re-assemble or something......

Anyway, after warranty it's the first thing I'm throwing out.

thay still don,t have a fix for this one. it seems, if you can,t see the speedo that would be a safety problum, [talk to big dog people at factory!!!]

I usually only look at the odometer to see when I need fuel, use the tach sometimes and usually only look at the speedometer within a nanosecond of seeing a cop. And yup, it fogs up within 15 miles in the winter, and about 25 in the summer.
Either way, I do not really care if it does or not. :job:

It's funny so many are fogging up. My 2003 has a small crack in the viewing lense that I thought of replacing, but I'm afraid to take the speedo apart to just replace that. Maybe I should let it be, so it can breath and get rid of moisture. Gee, a cracked lense is now a feature. LOL

BTW Chopper Dave, I love that Avatar you have. She's hot. What a gal!!!
