Fried something

Good day gents,

I'm having an issue with my 2006 K9 (carbed) doggo. So, I'll give you some context as to what brought me here as I'm always on here seeking advice or help on various issues but this time I'm hurting and anxious to get back on the road. So what happened was I met my father at a local business and then went to start my bike and nothing happened when I hit the run button (usually clicks) and then hit the starter button. Nothing, so I took the seat off and had seen that my cheap ass battery post had busted in half, my fault for not using solid posts, however my Pops was like well I've got a pair of pliers, we can get it running and you just ride it straight home. On the way home approximately 3-4 miles it dies about halfway there. So again I take the seat off to look at it and this time I notice that when trying to pliers my way back home again it will not do anything. In fact this time there's no red light on that box next to the battery and also, now all my indicator lights, turns, oil pressure, and neutral lights are all lit up, yet she won't do anything, no more click no more starting. I'm afraid I have fried something. I've been reading on here that these doggos have wiring issues and usually an aftermarket setup does the trick, thoughts, recommendations? As always, I'm grateful for any advice or criticism.

First get a decent battery - Deka seems about the most popular one for BDM owners.

After you install it check the voltage on battery -- should be 12.8v (a fully charged battery) If it's lower disconnect and charge it up.
reconnect when fully charged and again check voltage, should nothave dropped (a drop could indicate a short)
Press start/run, check for light on ehc and headlight etc
Press run

Report results back so we can point you at next step dependingo n results of tests.
Be methodical -- label wires when disconnected and/or take pictures to ensure you put them back where they came from.

Be sure to disconnect the - (ground) side first and then the + (positive). When you reinstall the new battery connect the +(Positive) side first and then the - (ground). After you have successfully installed the new battery and started the bike make sure the battery is being charged. It should read approx 14 vdc while running. If it's not charging reset the Circuit Breaker because it may have popped when the terminal on the original battery went south. Hopefully your EHC isn't smoked.

Bought an HD 65989-97E battery. Installed as instructed after charging overnight. (13.2v) My right turn signal flasher is on with key off. (Odd) No other lights are on though.

When I turn the key to the on position my dash lights come on but my right turn signal is brighter than the left, like it's stuck on flashing but it's not flashing.

When I attempt to activate my turn signals or brake lights they do nothing. Also my ignition module light is not on.

Tried hitting run, no click and also hit start for the hell of it and it does nothing either. I also checked all my fuses and they're not blown.

I also ohmed my big 40 amp fuse and it shows .01 at first but then drops to .00.

Took some pictures for you guys too.20241022_231126.jpg20241022_231915.jpg20241022_232400.jpg

Well I gotta say that doesn’t sound good. What is lit up on the EHC? Did your headlight come on? Sounds very similar to what happened when my Ridgeback EHC finally crapped out.Yes the EHC should be close by fuses. Remove the side panels

OK, first concern is the turn signal flasher on with key off.
I'd look at the keyswitch and see if it is stock (two light weight wires with a JST connector)

I'd also think we need more of a description of what you did with the pliers to get the bike to run again.

Please take a picture of the other side of the battery box as mentioned above it sounds like wiring may have been altered.

Connect with Mr. Wright. He lives in Missouri & is good wrenching on BigDogs. Not to far from Joplin I believe just can’t think of the town. He can help you out. He will be along shortly I would assume. Good luck!
 :chopper:
I'd concur with this, He's in Salem MO, not exactly around the corner but good big dog techs are few and far between and he is one of them.

I concur with big Mike. Anytime you are fortunate enough to have a good decent guy who works on big dogs close, it is a blessing. I can only speak to Knothead but man he really knows his stuff and is honest, thorough, and just a great guy. I am blessed to be just a few hours away. Reaching out to Shannon would greatly benefit you I am sure.

I read your original post again and realized you said when you hit the run button on your bike you normally hear a click. The run button on a stock k9 turns on the ignition but does not have an audible click. Your bike must have a relay that's clicking to provide power to your ignition. In your case, no click means no power to the ignition.
I would start pulling fuses off circuits and look for changes that may help you diagnose the issue.

Your bike must have been rewired. This is the stock wire diagram. Note no fuse box.
My Dad thinks that some added running lights or LEDs may have been added before I bought the bike to make it look cool at which one point was removed by the guy I bought it from. I have no contact to that gentleman unfortunately to find out what was removed.

Can you remove the battery and snap a photo in the battery box space of what all is in there. May not be the original wiring harness & EHC on the bike. A couple of good pics should help determine exactly what you have there.
