Hard to say, I am in Naples waiting for rear wheel pulley, or sprocket or whatever you call it, bike is in other side of the Florida.... have a little work to do and hope to get bike together around weekend and have time to ride it back early next week... we will see...
" Waiting for rear wheel pulley, or sprocket or whatever you call it" :oldconfused: Lets just call it " that shiny belt thingy".:yesnod: Can't ya call a neighbor kid, and have them run over to your garage, and pull that breather off ? :oldhardlaugh::oldhardlaugh::oldhardlaugh:

All you need to do is try to blow air through the breather hose and if it lets the air go through then you need a new check valve. If you can't blow air through it then you have another problem.

This thread got me to thinkin again. Remember back in the day, when your car engine had that big old pipe coming out of the front of the intake manifold ( G.M.) with that big filter cap on it ? Then they just put that big filter cap on the valve cover. Then the hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner, then that PCV valve from the valve cover to the carb ? They call that Progress.?

I know and what Is ever worse is that the EPA buys into the shit. I am going to reroute my breather hose to the bottom of the frame. I was tuning my carb and forgot to put the hose back on before the tuning process and I finally got it tuned right per the S&S manual. Then I put the hose back on and it changed the way my bike was running.

:yesnod: I used to wash them out with gas all the time:old2:

EGR valve back in the 80's. "Exhaust Gas Recurlation" same concept. The exhaust gases would get sent back up to the carb to get burned again.

That was what they had on my 80's jeep. Along with a charcoal canister. Everybody unhooks the damn thing.

Compression is pretty much 190/190.
I never noticed the noise on mine until I changed to the S&S dual air intake and it was running on the lift. As I got close to the air filter I could hear the same noise as you did. Compression numbers sounds good, just watch for blue smoke or oil out the exhaust. Don't think you have a problem, you just need louder exhaust. Lol!

Do you check the check valve as stated above.

Question: " Hey brother so I understand the part about rerouting the breather line from the rear head. Should I put a filter on the end because I got a kit that is actually for a sportster that came with the 3/8" tubing and a wire mesh filter and the instructions say to route the hose to the underside of the bike and install the filter. What do you think? I figured out that the stock setup was hurting the way my bike runs when I was working on my carb and I forgot to put the tube on the backing plate and I was tuning my carb and it was finally working the way it was supposed to be and the bike was never running better. Then I put the hose on the backing plate and it started running worse. So know that I know that it won't hurt my engine I am going to reroute the hose."

Answer: That's the issue with these engines. If they had good ring seal and had a good scavenge side to the oil pump, that hose would produce a vacuum and not pulse pressure. Many don't know that when these engines are warmed up good, they puke oil and contaminants out of that line. Not to many know because it gets sucked up back in through the carb and contaminates the charge. The breather most likely will get soaked and leak on your engine. That's why I suggest the continuation of the hose as I mentioned.

if you are wondering what happened to all the posts to this thread, i just took some of MY time to clean it up. what happened to the SELF-MODERATION that i was talking about a week or 2 ago ??????? i try to keep the forum at a loose reign but it seems like things just keep heading into a place that nobody likes, then i end up playing the bad guy and being a censor. i do have other things to do.

You need to leak down these engines when they are really warmed up good. Leaking a cold engine typically will work fine, that's if the block, which is your cylinders have a structure that is stable. In this case they are not and therefor your test results can drastically change from cold to hot. With that said, if you do not have a barometer to go by, a good engine tested hot, then you're pissing in the wind because the only comparison you might make is that of a completely different design.

Building engines for 33 years, i'll take a good stab at what is considered "good" based upon understanding these engines.

18 to 25 percent when really warmed up and hot. I'd kinda be surprised if they leak like a good v8 engine which is around 10-12. Also do remember, that if the engine is oiling, then that will give you a false indication because the oil will provide for a false seal.

When doing this leak procedure, and getting it hot, make sure that vent line does not go back to the air filter or manifold area, because if the rings and cylinder finish are questionable, then it will have excessive crankcase pressures and it will send oil up and in that line. Some seems to be normal based upon the poor engineering of the oil pump scavenge stage and ring choice by S&S.
