Oil not returning to oil tank?

I removed the little piston and spring from the top of the oil pump. It had very dirty oil in that area. Was able to get it out with a magnet. Cleaned it good and made sure it was sliding up and down in the pump cavity.

Ran the bike up to operating temperature and your right no smoke. So my problems came from me overfilling the oil tank. The reasons were; One - my oil light was flickering (but now believe it was a loose battery connection as it stopped) and two - could not get a reading on my dip stick.

So I will just make sure I put 3 qts of oil in her and keep up with the frequent oil changes.

Thanks for your help and feedback and all you other folks who chimed in! This is a great site with great people!

Have a great summer Th3InfamousI.
Glad to hear it..

Just always make sure you are checking the oil on the dipstick when the bike is warm so some of it hasn't fed back down into the sump. It will always read about 1/2 quart short when cold

Not sure if it is the same for the 07' K9s but on my 06, even though it has a dip stick, using that is not the recommended way to check the oil but rather holding the bike upright after it is warmed up and visually looking to see the oil in the bottom of the filler neck. Using the DS could cause the overfill issue?

Most people would prolly choose to check the oil before they go riding, and on my 07' the DS says to check it on the kickstand so the bike is leaning toward the DS to check it.

Agree re: check before riding; however, warm up for a few minutes before checking the level.... from my manual, again perhaps changed for '07s and newer?

The problem comes about I think when you have the option to have a 1" extended kickstand. SInce that stands the bike up more, it would take more oil to reach the dipstick, albeit I do not believe that much.

Basically, it's a very annoying design.

Think that was a typo should be on the kickstand. I believe we hit a thread sometime ago about this.

Either way on the kickstand is plenty of oil rather than straight up. I never understood why someone would design it for straight anyways kind of a pain to try and hold a bike up and check the oil dipstick level.

Regardless of on kickstand or level that doesn't really matter at all as long as the bike is normal operating temperature. The difference is maybe 1/4-1/2 quart of oil and the way the oil system work you will never be in fear of running out of oil

If it was a typo, it was a two (2) sentence typo. My dip stick / oil cap also does not have the instructions on it as Ker posted? That is why I thought perhaps instructions were modified post 2006 models. Do agree it is a PITA to hold the bike upright when trying to check as I have been doing for the last 11 years....

The tank design never changed they just updated it to check on the kickstand. Since oil supply is at the bottom of the tank. Cause it's really fine, I believe mostly because people were overfilling it..lol

The hard tails are still check with bike and upright position and that has to be that way based on the oil line routing. If you dont have it upright you will be short on oil. The oil tanks on hard tails are under the bike and the supply is actually on the side of the tank rather than under it. So much more critical to have the level correct. It's actually a pain in the ass because it's at the back and on the side. So if you slam your breaks on sometimes my oil light goes on in I'm a bit low. Easy way to know I better add a little though.

What the.....I decided to go ahead and replace my oil filter with a new one. Check out the pictures. The short one (on the right)is a new K&N unit that I purchased off of Amazon 2 days ago for $8.40. Compare it to the same model (K&N 170C) that I purchased back in 2016 from the same vendor. The new one has a detailed K&N logo, 6 drain holes and is shorter than the other one. It looks like I may have gotten a Cheap Chinese knock-off of a K&N filter back in 2016. Maybe this Chinese "copy" did cause my overfilled sump issue by not allowing oil to return to the oil tank fast enough?? I read that Amazon is full of Chinese Junk...

I think K&N filters used to be made in Korea, now in Thailand. There was a change in filters when they changed manufacturer.

Well, I do believe that was the issue as I've had similar things happen.
Also when you at the logo on the one -- its not right (center of nut)

Getting the wrong filter is also what motivated me to along with long term cost to convert to the K&P Engineering permanent oil filter.

Really a very interesting topic. I also do not understand why after the winter parking oil accumulates in the crankcase. As for check ball, how is this related to the models with the oil tank under the transmission? Their oil can not flow out through the ball. So why does not oil come back?? Even if it's a ball, then after warming up the engine, all the oil should return to the oil tank. But the oil remains in the crankcase. Why? The pump is running. The gears are spinning. The oil circulates. But it remains in the crankcase. Relief Valve? It is needed to return the oil in case of too high a pressure. For example, with cold start or too high revs. So what's the reason?

Its above on the K9 and Mastiff

Thanks for all the knowledge on this topic. Great read and very informative. So to be clear. K&N 170c filter is a 6 hole or 8 hole. I've always just relied on the fact that they were boxed correctly. Just changed oil about a week or two ago and never took notice to the number of holes. However I would like to know so when I buy new ones I can check before hand, until I buy a washable. Need to get the money first, by wife needs new car and daugther is getting married so temporarily I'm changing my name to Fundsalow.
