Removed Restrictors and got XXX'd!

If you have an 05 ...it came from the factory with restrictor plates. If you pull the plates out, there is a spacer that must be put back in place of the plates to fill the gap between the intake manifold and the head (where the plates used to be). If someone rode up 1000' and the bike ran like crap, his jetting was probably not right to begin with.

Here is where you will find the restrictor plates. Right where the manifold bolts to the cylinders.

ALL 2005 BIG DOGS HAVE THEM. If you take them out, you must either machine them larger, or install the spacer kit.

Ok ... I called the dealer where I bought my 05 Ridgeback and the service guy says that on the 05's there are no plates. I guess the only way to tell is to pull the carb off ... but to those of you that have "done it" ... are the plates between the intake and the motor or between the intake and the carb or between the carb and the air cleaner? ... I just have to take the darn thing off I guess to be sure ... I don't want to machine it down ... I heard of someone taking them off and then rode 1000' up and it ran line crap so he had to put the plate back on. So if I machine it down and it doesn't work .. I'll looking for a new restrictor plate .... thanks for any info on this
I would be weary of your service department if they don't know about the restictor plates.
All 05's came with them and only for 05 models then they realized they didn't need them.
Here is the link again that was posted earlier in this thread.

If you bought your 05 used you may find that they have already been removed. They do required spacers to fill in the extra space available from BDM.

Good luck,
Ray

I Can See Clearly Now ....

Thanks for the info ... I've heard a lot of good things about the xxx carb ... and I'm leaning that way ... I'm also looking at the Big Air carb but the $$$ seems a bit much ... and the rideability of it. Thanks again ...

Agree with Raywood for the 05 were the only ones that had the restrictor plates and if he service guy is so sure of that-be cautious. He may be getting it mixed up with another year, but be cautious what they tell you.

On my 05 Mastiff, I had them put the Mean Mothers on before picking it up and at that time, BD provided kit with different jet/s and spacers-gaskets for installation to account for removing the restrictor.

????

Ok ... but putting the Mean Mother pipes is the exhaust right? And the intake ???? I put the Mean Mother pipes too but didn't mess with the intake ... I'm learning as I go ... I do appreciate your input ... Has anybody have experience with the Big Air Carb? I know $$$$ vs. XXX Carb ..smaller $$ .... thanks ... you guys/gals have been a big help ...

Surferdude,

When they put the MM on, my 05 had (and still does) the Super E Carb, which was standard. If yours still had the Super E on and you installed the MM, more than likely the restrictor plate is still there.

If so, get a spacer plate, some new gaskets and a few jets, take it out and adjust and you will see some difference for sure. If you go with a Super G carb, you will need different intake and will not install the restrictors back on.

You will be surprised how much of a difference the MM and removing the restrictor with proper jetting will make from dead on stock.

I'm eyeing up the PSI now I must admit - Sul, presumably it outperforms the xxx noticeably? it would need to for that price

Sul...I did not know you had one...sorry. I have not seen a post on how awesome it is or if it lives up to all the hype. Please tell us so we will know once and for all!

Well one thing for sure, Sul is the ultimate Carb tester for the BD. If not mistaken he has gone from Stock to Super G, to xXx, to Weber to PSI. Last I seen he seems that the newest version of the PSI is the tits for HIS build.

Keep in mind HIS build is something else and what may work for him may not work for us all.

He will pipe back in I am sure but from the most recent info, it does see, that the PSI are pretty good.

I hope so...it seems like a year now that we have been waiting to hear the real story on these carbs...and all we heard before was they aren't right yet. If anyone can wring this thing out...it would be Sul.

SulConst,

Now that you mention it, I notice the Hooker 4 bidden pipes. How do you like them for that is one that I have and do serious consideration to possibly installing down the road.

WOW!! I took the restrictor plates out of the manifold and machined them out so the matched the intake. I reinstalled them with new gaskets. I also put on a new XXX Super E carb, and wow. My Mastiff runs and sounds so much better. I can now break the rear tire loose shifting through 3rd gear. Before, the bike pulled okay, but now it feels like it wants to pull the front off the ground. If anyone has a 05, pull those restrictors and either buy the replacement spacers, or get yours machined. Huge difference!!
Does anybody know where to get the spacers? I have a 05 BD 117cu Super E. I've been looking all over the internet and can't find them. I really don't want to machine then out ... just incase I have to up them back to what it was. I'm just chicken ... I'm also planning to do the XXX carb mod ... hopefully soon when my refund check comes in ... I already got the ok from the wife when I told her the $$$$ for the PSI Big Air carb ... which brings up another question ... anybody with the 117cu put on the Big Air and what do they think about it ... in town rideability etc? thanks ...

You should be able to get or order the spacers from any Bigdog dealer.

If you can't get them from your local Big Dog dealer, I can machine a set for you. Probably lookin around 25.00 shipped. I machined mine out because you will never have a need to go back to stock. All they do is allow for more air flow.

I got my ... I mean we got our refund check today ... called the BD dealer ... they are out of spacers ... so I think a lot of 05 BD owers are taking their restrictor plates out ... maybe next week they should have them in ... so in a week or so I'll have the Super E off to Texas. But tomorrow I'm going to Prescott where someone has a PSI Big Air on their bike so I'm going to check it out. Weather here in Arizona is getting really nice ... so I hope to get this done soon.

Why dont you just buy a g-manifold? toss the e-manifold in the dumpster?

Well I'm trying to keep the price $$$ as far away from the PSI Big Air carb as I can ... so if I get the G set up I'm more than 1/2 to the PSI ... I read that the G xxx mod doesn't get you anything ... but that was one guys opinion.
Anybody has any input? thanks
